I chose 8th grade because it was the highest grade level I could choose and the closest to the grade level I actually want to teach which is colle level. LAFS.8.L.3.4 is the standard that I chose for this assignment because I remember meeting this specific standard when I was in 8th grade. Specifically. the part about greek and latin prefixes rung true to what I was taught in 8th grade, and learning all 500 of those that I was taught has helped me amass my vocabulary. This standard discusses teaching students how to read through context and how to understand passages about things they may not understand, through the idea of context clues. I would be able to implement this right now because all of those latin and Greek prefixes are fresh in my mind still and using context clues to solve problems is my favorite thing to do, so teaching this to others would be fun for me.

I chose 12th grade toolkits and chose the resource of formative assessments in order to help my student learn. Formative assessments are tests that assess the knowledge that a student has about a certain subject so for my hypothetical math classroom, I chose the formative assessment about "proving the triangle inequality". This would test my students on knowledge that I had taught them and to gauge how well they know the material. I feel as though. although the students would not like an extra test, it would help me as a teacher to see where my students lacked knowledge on certain subjects so that I could fill in the gaps.

Internet searching properly takes skills that are not really taught in schools unless students take specialized classes. It is important to be proficient in internet searching as a teacher because finding information to help your students takes practice in knowing how to google things properly. Google has an advanced search option in which someone can exclude terms that they do not want to look up and I believe this to be the most important skill that was discussed this week. This skill is important because it keeps you focused on the subject that you are trying to research instead of getting distracted by irrelevant results that come up.

  1. Hey Jake! I totally agree with the importance of learning Greek and Latin prefixes in helping to expand a student's vocabulary. Even if they do not always know the word in front of them, if they know the prefix they can use context clues to figure out the word. I love that teaching this to others would be fun for you! It is so important for teachers to be passionate about the topics they are teaching so students are also motivated to learn!

  2. Hi Jake!
I like how your take on Internet searching noted how these skills are not taught across a common school standard but are only introduced in specific/ optional classes. I then looked at the map for FSU Elementary Education and there is no class that specifies learning the use of technology in classrooms unless one takes this optional class, EME2040. Nevertheless, it is important for teachers to be proficient in these skills.
