The term copyright to me has always meant anything that is created by someone and published by that person, can not be used as another person's own words. This meaning, that people would have to cite these publications when using them in any form. Fair use, to my knowledge, is the ability to use these publications as previously stated without citing them in certain scenarios such as critiquing them. As a teacher, copyright is important when it comes to the creation of my tests and exams for my class, such that other teachers would be encouraged to make their own instructional items rather than take mine. Students would also be advised against using other classmates' work as this is plagiarism and would go against the "copyright" that is created when students turn in their own work.
Academic dishonesty is a subject that feels to have been around forever, or at least as long as I have been in school. My graduating class had 10 different people kicked out of my high school program due to academic dishonesty in the form of copying off of other's works. A way to eliminate this threat in my classroom, is the use of anti-plagiarism applications such as TurnitIn where it lets me know if my students' work is copied from someone else's or off of online. Productivity amongst students has been on a steady decline it seems, and this can be caused by a multitude of things such as trouble at home, disinterest in the topic in general, or anything else that could be taking the attention away from the subject matter at hand for the student. The only scenario that I can fix as a teacher is to try and keep students interested in a topic that I am teaching and this will help increase productivity. I believe that I can accomplish this by fine tuning my lesson plans to incorporate everyone's interests and doing activities that encourage group participation from everyone in the class.
I will admit that the skills needed for the newsletter assignment were not in my wheelhouse of my strongest skills. I lack any real skill in graphic design and I really hope to improve on this matter. I believe through this assignment, I was able to gather new information about my skills with formatting in Microsoft Word and I believe that my skills are present in that skillset. I could improve on my newsletter for the future by researching what looks better to the human eye when it comes to colors and fonts.
Jake I thought you had done a very good job on your newsletter. I have kids in the local elementary school and receive newsletters from them. The method in which you designed as well as how you worded it makes me think that you are a teacher getting ready to take these kids to another state LOL. I also have a lacking of experience in how to navigate through MS and PowerPoint in a creative manner. I am used to just using PowerPoint to do slideshows. and MS to write essays.
